What can literature tell us about the war which hasn't already been said? Writing her account of why she was in France; delivering coded secrets; laying bare her thoughts — Queenie did all WWII brought together two young women on the shores of England — Maddie of Manchester and Queenie of Scotland.
Code Name Verity was, directly or indirectly, recommended to me by two of my trusted friends, Chachic and Jo, and, as I already mentioned, my favorite young adult author Maggie Stiefvater. Maddie, a verigy but modest pilot, and Julie, an aristocratic Scotswoman turned spy.
When she describes her torture, her bruises, her broken heart, her fear and her guilt, I believe she is telling the truth with all my heart.
Overall I really enjoyed it.
Unreliable narrators are fun and this keeps the reader guessing. There have been a couple of negative reviews hame have made me want to stab myself in the eyes in frustration. View all 35 comments.

There are some slow nmae where I just wanted the story to kick into a higher gear: But this also means that the characters aren't as developed as many adult novels. Suddenly they were separated — Queenie was captured by the Gestapo and feared for her life. Unfortunately I finished it right before bedtime, so of course I had trouble sleeping that night!
Another thing vetity gets downplayed or ignored is female friendship, which always takes second seat to a romance or, more often, fighting over a man.

It does make one wonder what you would have done had you found yourself in that situation, if you had been caught in the scenarios that Maddie and Julie were thrown into. Retrieved May 26, Is this book suitable for children? The story is gripping, with tension and danger throughout--natural This is one of those books that's almost impossible to talk about without revealing plot elements, and that's most enjoyable to discover as you go.
I meant to put this on my DNF shelf ages ago but I couldn't even be bothered to do that much because that is how bored I was. This book is not very plot-focused or fast-paced, it's about conversations and people and female pilots during the second world war, which would all have been great if it had been balanced out with a touch of drama.
